The newest Marvel release has seen a lot of new and unforgettable characters enter the superhero universe. Although we all have our favorites, Jeff Goldblum’s appearance as Grandmaster is outstanding.
Thus, you can imagine how Thor: Ragnarok would have been if Goldblum wasn’t a part of the film, as the writer Eric Pearson recently told Yahoo! About the actor being out of the project for a brief duration.
At the time of writing the movie, Pearson was aware of the various possibilities that the script could incorporate such as the Grandmaster in the film, and he was unsure about how to write the character of this Elder of the Universe until he heard Goldblum’s name.
“There are so many different ways you can go with that character,” Person said. “He could be a power-hungry monster. Or he’s cool and vindictive. And they’re like, ‘We’re going to Jeff Goldblum.’ And I’m like, ‘Got it.'”
The dialogues and mannerisms of the character were modeled keeping Goldblum’s speech patterns and manners in mind, however, it all seemed to have fallen apart.
“And then at one point they came back and said it’s not going to work out. I’m like, ‘No! Who’s going to do all this now?’” Pearson said.
Fortunately, everything worked out, and Marvel Studios got one more hilarious character in the MCU to use in the future movies if Goldblum reprises the role.
While the reason has not been explained about why the actor’s participation hung in the balance, there are some possible answers. Goldblum was also being considered at that time for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and while being negotiated for the project, he has also given voice to the Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animation movie Isle of Dogs. We don’t know if the various projects crossed paths.
In any case, Goldblum is a unique actor in the modern day Hollywood and to see how Marvel Studios played to his strengths is a bit surprising. It has definitely been a successful move because Grandmaster has proven to be one of the several fun characters in the latest MCU movie. Although, he is not the main villain in Thor: Ragnarok, yet, his threatening presence makes a major impact on the film’s story. It just won’t be the same movie without Goldblum.
