TNT has approved a Snowpiercer series, which is a futuristic thriller inspired by a highly appreciated movie bearing the same title. The series features Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), the Tony Award and Grammy winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Black-ish), Mickey Sumner (American Made), Susan Park (Ghostbusters), Benjamin Haigh (The Conjuring 2), Sasha Frolova (The Interestings), Katie McGuinness (Dirty Filthy Love), Alison Wright (The Accountant), Annalise Basso (Bedtime Stories), Sam Otto (Jellyfish), Roberto Urbina (Narcos on Netflix), Sheila Vand (Argo), and the winner of Tony Award as well as Grammy nominee Lena Hall (All My Children). Sarah Aubrey, EVP of original programming for TNT said this via a statement.
“I’m a personal fan of Bong Joon Ho’s epic film, and jumped at the chance to honor his original vision, yet expand upon the world and characters with a diverse, award-winning cast. Science fiction is the perfect genre to examine issues of race, class, gender and natural resources with thought-provoking and exciting storytelling. Snowpiercer will explore those relevant issues while embarking on a wild, action-filled ride.”
Snowpiercer is based in a time seven years after the world became permafrost, and it revolves around the left-overs of mankind, who live in a huge, continuously globe-trotting train. The gripping TV series touches the topics such as Class warfare, social injustice, and survival games. Connelly plays the role of Melanie Cavill, a First Class passenger who also happens to be the Voice of the Train, entrusted with the task of making daily announcements via the PA system. While several other VIP category people like her are not kind to the lower spectrum passengers, Melanie has a curiosity towards them. Diggs plays Layton Well, a prisoner who battles the tough conditions at the tail end of the train. Layton is a silent thinker who kills his time by sniffing a drug Chronole created from industrial waste, and also deals with his rat filled cage. He hesitatingly becomes involved in a battle that could change life on the train. Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios stated.
“Given the exceptional global appeal of the original film, we have a tremendous obligation to ensure the TV adaptation is exceptional in scope and magnitude. We have found that with TNT and with our talented cast. Now we are excited to work together in creating a world unlike any other on television.”
Tomorrow Studios have jointly produced Snowpiercer with Turner’s Studio T and CJ Entertainment. Scott Derrickson directed the pilot written by Josh Friedman (Avatar 4, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). Executive producers of Snowpiercer are Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein (Aquarius, Prison Break, Teen Wolf), Becky Clements (Good Behavior, Aquarius, Last Man Standing) and Bong Joon Ho, Park Chan-Wook, Lee Tae-Hun, Dooho Choi from the original Snowpiercer movie. There is no production schedule revealed for the series as of now, and it has not been announced as to when the series will be telecast by TNT. The Snowpiercer film had Chris Evans, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris, Alison Pill, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner and Luke Pasqualino in leading roles.
