DC Comics is very close to creating an open-to-all Batman crossover between Superman, Super Sons and Teen Titans. The upcoming “Super Sons of Tomorrow” will feature the Batman of Tomorrow (a future version of Tim Drake aka present Red Robin), traveling back in time to present day to save the lives of millions of civilians. As per the Future Tim, the catastrophe will be unleashed by none other than Superboy, and this knowledge has compelled him to travel in time to kill the young superhero.
Batman of Tomorrow History Lesson
Before jumping ahead, let’s check what the Future Tim has been doing. We last saw him in the panels of Detective Comics #965-968, when he was shown to be a captive of Mr. Oz alongside the present day Batman. Future Tim comes from the Titans of Tomorrow timeline created by Geoff Johns and Mike McKone in their Teen Titans series in 2005. Robin, Superboy, Wonder Girl and the other Teen Titans grew up to take over from their mentors and ruled as dictators over the US West Coast. One of the most unexpected things came from Tim Drake, who revolted against all that Batman has been by showcasing his love for guns brazenly.
After he managed to escape from Mr. Oz’s prison, Future Tim figures out that the events taking place in the present can modify his timeline (the future). This made him take on Batwoman, who he believes is responsible for the failure of Batmen and causing his own life to go down a horrible path. The Bat-Family is forced to come together to prevent Future Tim before Hypertime sucks him back into the river of time. We had thought that it was the last time we saw the Batman of Tomorrow. However, Superman #37 suggests a different truth.
Batman of Tomorrow vs. World’s Finest
The first segment of “Super Sons of Tomorrow” shows Future Tim Drake taking his solo crusade right down to Wayne Manor. The artist Jorge Jimenez and colorist Alejandro Sanchez have created a fierce battle between the present and future Batmen. Bruce Wayne is not rattled by the comeback of Tim Drake, but, he is caught unawares by Tim’s target. The Future Batman clarifies that he didn’t want to come here, but, he is willing to do anything to win, even if shooting his ex-mentor be the thing required.
After getting rid of Bruce, Tim gathers some essential items from the Batcave and goes out to chase his next target at the Fortress of Solitude. The common factor between Batman and Superman happens to be that they both had to confront unexpected twists to the members of their extended families. At the time when Detective Comics’ cast battled the Batman of Tomorrow, Superman found out the real identity of Mr. Oz.
Future Tim tries every possible trick to defeat the Superman, and even hijacks the battle armor of the Man of Steel. However, the time traveler ultimately prevailed with the help of a trap laced with Red Kryptonite. That’s when the Future Tim disclosed that if Superman’s future has to be saved, then his son Superboy has to die.
Another Batman of Tomorrow Enters The Fray
It was known to us for quite some time that the Batman of Tomorrow would be the main terror in “Super Sons of Tomorrow” crossover. Ever since we saw Future Tim appear in Detective Comics, the possibility of his being the Batman of Tomorrow was always suggested in solicits. But, it was the November’s Super Sons #10 which featured a two-page, “Intermezzo” which hinted at a different Batman of the Future. That one happens to be Damian Wayne seen in Grant Morrisson’s Batman #666, an adaptation of Bruce Wayne’s son who had bartered his soul to the Devil to stop the global destruction.
It appears as if Tim managed to be in an alternate Titans of Tomorrow timeline, where Damian had lost his mind after he sold his soul to the Devil. Raven narrated that Tim is stuck in the middle of the Super-Sons until the time he compelled Jonathan to choose something resulting in a catastrophic explosion which killed millions of people.
It is nothing new for the readers to see, Jonathan and Damian argue as youngsters, however, there happens some argument in the future which makes them try to kill each other. It could be that Damian knew that if he stopped Tim in the present, he would be able to prevent his deal with the Devil, which led to his altering the timeline knowingly.
Irrespective of how Tim or Damian deal with each other, “Super-Sons” is bound to create a long-term impact on the DC Universe. Bruce will have to accept the terrible things done by his apprentice and son. It is clear that he won’t kill anyone to stop them, but, we can’t say the same about the Batmen of Tomorrow. What if Future Tim or Damian remain captive in the present? However, we know what kind of a person will Tim adopt if this happened to him.
