Apple is now entering the arena of original content, and while they are going to adopt a vastly different strategy compared to Netflix, that doesn’t imply that they won’t come up with big budget projects featuring stellar names. In fact, there has been an announcement a short while back about Apple planning to make a reboot of the highly appreciated 80s series Amazing Stories. Steven Spielberg will produce it, and Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) is coming on board the creative team for this series. It seems that his exit from Star Trek: Discovery hasn’t hurt Fuller’s career prospects as this is also set to be a huge project.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed the information about the Amazing Stories reboot and it is said to be among one of the projects that Apple was reportedly interested in. This is going to be a ten episodes deal. However, there is no timeline for the premiere or launch of Amazing Stories by Apple. This project is a part of a much larger deal between NBCUniversal and Apple. This is what Jennifer Salke, President of NBC Entertainment said about the Amazing Stories reboot through a statement.
“It’s wonderful to be reunited with our colleagues Zack [Van Amburg] and Jamie [Erlicht] in their new capacity at Apple. We love being at the forefront of Apple’s investment in scripted programming, and can’t think of a better property than Spielberg’s beloved Amazing Stories franchise with the genius of Bryan Fuller at the helm and more exciting creative partnerships to come.“
There have been constant approaches made by Hollywood to Apple regarding potential projects. However, they only went for a few select options with Amazing Stories being among the early birds that got the green signal. It is reported that Apple has also bid on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest spinoff by Ryan Murphy titled Ratched which was ultimately clinched by Netflix. The reason might have been financial.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Apple plans to spend $1 billion in their opening year of original programming, while, Netflix has a purse of close to $6 billion for this year. Therefore, it is expected that Netflix is going to prevail over most of its rivals for projects. However, it will cost them big money. Apple has no lack of money, but, they are being cautious and not deluging the original marketing arena in a rash manner.
Bringing Steven Spielberg on for the Amazing Stories reboot is a major achievement for Apple as he is going to draw a lot of attention to the project. The original series had run for two seasons between 1985-1987, and it grabbed five Emmy Awards. If Apple manages to recreate this sci-fi drama for the tastes of the modern audiences, then it would be something that will create a lot of attention for the original content as well. There is no report from THR about the time when the Amazing Stories reboot will be available for viewing. However, we will keep you updated as soon as further information is revealed.
