Does Star Wars: The Last Jedi show Luke Skywalker moving on to the dark side?
The film’s latest trailer showed Luke (played by Mark Hamill) extremely scared and cranky. “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before,” he is seen telling Rey (Daisy Ridley).”It didn’t scare me enough then. It does now.” His words have flashes of his Jedi Temple going up in flames as seen in The Force Awakens when Ben Solo (Adam Driver) – popularly known as an aspiring Sith Kylo Ren and the son of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Admiral Leia (Carrie Fisher) switched to the dark side.
The audience got the first whiff of the terrible outcome of Luke’s efforts to teach at the time of Rey’s Force vision in The Force Awakens. The new trailer suggests that we will get to witness that horrible night’s incidents in The Last Jedi.
Luke told Rey about her unutilized raw power being similar to the power that his lost nephew Ben had. This old man who is in a self-imposed exile is reluctant to tread the same path, and it is not just because he is afraid of Rey’s power, but, he is worried about his own. It is assumed that Luke is the most powerful living being in the galaxy and is presently in hiding on the far-lying Ahch-To and Kylo Ren has been chasing him doggedly. In the initial sequences of The Force Awakens, we had seen how this masked villain was trying to find the map that takes him to Skywalker.
“Let the past die,” Kylo says in The Last Jedi trailer. “Kill it, if you have to. That’s the only way to become what you were meant to be.” It is not clear as to who he was conversing with, and even if we do get a hint, it could just be an editing manipulation to keep the real identity hidden because the trailer seems to be grossly misleading. We don’t know if he was talking to Rey? It is true that Rey is grappling with her past and she doesn’t know about her origins or true identity. She is just craving for the unknown family that abandoned her on Jakku.
It is possible that Kylo was talking to himself. He has been finding it difficult to stay true to his allegiance to the dark side, and it might be an internal tussle. Maybe Kylo was talking to Luke and asking his mighty uncle to follow his advice and be like his grandfather and Luke’s father, Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader? In case Kylo wanted to become as powerful as Darth Vader was or to reach the lofty heights scaled by Luke then it is obvious that this dark side loyalist will try and convince Luke to join him. This would ensure an unlimited power to harness.
There is also an intriguing theatrical display which hinted about a darker hue to the Jedi Master’s existence. We won’t know for sure about what The Last Jedi will reveal about this farmboy who became an iconic space wizard until the Episode VIII of the fabled Star Wars releases in the winter. This Rian Johnson directorial venture stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Lupita Nyong’o, Kelly Marie Tran, Gwendoline Christie, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro and Laura Dern.
