risk, but, the latest Star Wars movie only upped the ante by killing a lot of iconic characters. However, one death, in particular, hurt a section of fans, for the way how their favorite character was bumped off.
The fan reaction instigated Editor Bob Ducsay to respond by admitting that there was a possibility for them to provide a better sendoff to the popular Admiral Ackbar.
In The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren leads a TIE Fighter squad to attack the Resistance forces, firing missiles at the bridge and killing most of their top officers. General Leia Organa narrowly survives by a spontaneous Force use. However, it was later found out that Ackbar didn’t survive in the shock attack.
“That was how it was designed,” Ducsay told Huffington Post, while he admitted that now he is having second thoughts about how it all unfolded.
“It’s interesting that you mentioned it because I watched the film last night and I thought, hmmm, maybe that’s too incidental,” Ducsay said. “It’s a very funny thing about that because what happens … I don’t typically watch movies that I work on much afterward because you’re so familiar with it. But this movie I’ve seen now a couple times with an audience. And it occurred to me last night that what does happen when I watch movies … is I generally find things that are like, hmmm, I wonder if I should do that differently. Which is some really horrible form of personal criticism because there’s really nothing to be done.”
It is not unusual, but, every artist who reviews his work, even after the passage of a long time, discovers things that could be changed or done in a different way.
However, in this case, you can’t be sure whether it is Ducsay’s own artistic reflection that has made him express a desire to manage things differently, or the huge fan response.
Star Wars fans shouldn’t forget that a lot of the characters who became iconic are not really crucial to the narrative. While characters such as Boba Fett and Darth Maul are revered by the fandom, they die ordinary deaths because the films are not based on them.
In this instance, it’s hard to tell of Ducsay’s own personal artistry influenced his desire to do things differently, or the immense fan reaction.
Ackbar is just the latest edition to the list, but, considering his meme-favorite character had become so iconic after Return of the Jedi, there is a bit more disappointment.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently playing in cinemas.
