Spoiler Alert: This article contains Star Wars: The Last Jedi Spoilers. You are warned.
The official Star Wars Facebook account has come to the defense of Rose Tico from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, after she was attacked by the fans unhappy by the character’s actions in the movie.
Actress Kelly Marie Tran plays Rose in this Rian Johnson movie, and the character is of a mechanic who joins a mission by Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) to bring down the First Order’s tracking mechanism which allowed them to chase the Resistance through Hyperspace. A section of fans abused Rose in the comments related to Tran’s audition video. The fans seemed to be upset with how she tried to plan the failed mini-rebellion and hired the rogue code-breaker D.J. (Benicio Del Toro) in Canto Bight, and last, but, not the least how she prevented Finn’s suicidal attempt when he tried to smash his aircraft into the First Order’s battering ram on the planet of Crait. Some fans even raised questions about the need for the character and called her casting to be just a decision to create diversity.
The official Star Wars Facebook page responded by stating: “Prevented four Resistance deserters from stealing escape pods. Assisted in the formation of a plan that would’ve allowed the Resistance to escape the First Order pursuit. Persuaded a fathier stable boy to enable her and Finn’s escape from Canto Bight. Conducted an essential survey of available supplies available to the Resistance on Crait. Saved Finn from an inconsequential course of action that would’ve ended his life. For a character who did absolutely nothing, that’s impressive… most impressive.”
It further commented: “Personal growth is inherent to every Star Wars story. Without the detour to Canto Bight, Finn wouldn’t have grown past only caring about himself and his immediate circle of friends. And Rose wouldn’t have discovered her own ability to be the type of hero she idolized.”
The Rian Johnson directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Benicio Del Toro as “DJ,” Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, and the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa.
