Fans are hoping that Rian Johnson’s solo Star Wars trilogy will be adapting the storyline from Knights of the Old Republic. But it is time they let this desire go. Johnson has recently confirmed that he will not adapt the game in the new series. Though Johnson has heard his fans’ desires, he wants to do something new.
Released in 2003 as an Xbox exclusive, Knights of the Old Republic takes place years before the Skywalker saga. It is set in the time period of the Old Republic when the war between Jedi and Sith was rampant. It is a huge war with moving parts, characters and mythology. It is into this conflict that Knights of the Old Republic tells the simple story of 2 feuding Sith Lords and redemption. While Rian Johnson does not intend on telling that story again, he has not sworn off the Old Republic as the setting for the trilogy.
In an interview with Mashable, Johnson had been asked to talk about the rumors of him adapting Knights of the Old Republic. While he remained secretive about the trilogy, he squashed the adaption theory:
“Oh, [the fans] love Knights of the Old Republic. I played that game when it first came out and it was like, god, I loved it. Yeah, that’s a fantastic game. And I understand it, the instinct to automatically go to something that you know and love, that you’ve already seen. To me, what’s really fun is the notion of what new stuff are we gonna see, what new stories can we tell?”
While a direct adaptation of Knights of the Old Republic seems out of the question, Johnson did not rule out revisiting that time period. The new trilogy is not related “at all” to the current story that is playing out in The Last Jedi. An easy way to make this distinction clear is to set the trilogy thousands of years before Anakin Skywalker existed. There are lots of materials to explore within the Old Republic that is not related to the game.
It is rather expected that the Old Republic will be the setting for this trilogy, even after Johnson’s confirmation that he will not adapt Knights of the Old Republic. If Johnson wants to do something unexpected, he may pick a different time period and setting for his series. This may disappoint fans, but Johnson will be looking to fulfill his creative vision, not just to bow to fans’ desire.
