Daniel Craig had earlier sworn never to play James Bond again. In fact, he had gone on to say that he would prefer slitting his wrists rather than playing James Bond. Guess what! He is back playing 007 for one last time in the upcoming James Bond 25. For a number of years, people kept guessing about the next James Bond before it was confirmed that Craig would reprise the role of 007 once more. In a fresh interview, the movie’s producer Barbara Broccoli stated that the next actor to play James Bond might be a woman or even a person of another ethnic group. For the time being, Daniel Craig is here, but, who would take over from him to play the legendary character on the big screen?
Barbara Broccoli was in a conversation with Daily Mail, and she revealed that James Bond is a franchise that moves ahead with the times and “push the envelope” to create new stuff. At present, the future is not clear after Daniel Craig exits the franchise after starring in the upcoming Bond 25 film. Broccoli was asked about actors likely to replace Craig, and she said that she was very happy with Daniel Craig, but, confessed that “anything is possible” for the next actor who comes in. She said this when asked if a woman might be cast as 007.
“These films tend to reflect the times, so we always try to push the envelope a little bit. Anything is possible. Right now it’s Daniel Craig, and I’m very happy with Daniel Craig, but who knows what the future will bring?”
The late Sir Roger Moore, who passed away in May 2017 at the age of 89, had said back in 2015, “I have heard people talk about how there should be a lady Bond or a gay Bond.” But, Moore wasn’t in agreement with altering the character’s white male persona which is the embodiment of the character created by writer Ian Fleming. Moore said that he doesn’t intend to offend and only believes in staying true to the character written by Fleming. This is what he had said.
“But they wouldn’t be Bond for the simple reason that wasn’t what Ian Fleming wrote. It is not about being homophobic or, for that matter, racist – it is simply about being true to the character.”
Idris Elba’s name did the rounds about him taking over from Daniel Craig before Craig returned and a lot of people were delighted to see the first dark James Bond. Elba’s name kept circulating for more than a year, but, the Dark Tower star says that he was never asked to play the role or audition for it. The other name that was heard was Charlize Theron, and she has recently done a similar role in Atomic Blonde. When Theron was asked if she would want to play the first female 007, she replied that she would instead be happy to see Elba play the character.
There is still over a year to go before Bond 25 releases, so there is time to find James Bond’s successor. However, will fans identify with a lady JB? Or maybe a JB of color or a different sexuality? Time will answer these questions, but, no matter who comes in, there is bound to be some discontent about it. However, just like Barbara Broccoli said, “anything is possible.” We believe that the next version of 007 is bound to be different from what we have seen till now.
