The craze for McDonald’s Szechuan Sauce has taken an interesting turn in Michigan, and a woman has a new car to show for it.
Though there was lack of inventory and many disappointed customers came up who could not secure promotional sauce across the country, Rachel Marie of Macomb, Michigan, was a lucky one who managed to snag a packet. She traded her sauce to someone for a 2004 Volkswagen Golf GTI, according to The Drive.
Marie had posted:
“I didn’t even think I was going to get pin offers,” said Marie, “Then he offered the car.”
A few packets of the Szechuan Sauce are selling on eBay for hundreds of dollars with the highest auction listing going for $5000.
That is how much Fox 2 Detroit marked the value of Marie’s car.
The sauce was released in 1998 as a part of the promotion for Disney’s Mulan. It was around only for a limited time, and the Szechuan Sauce burst into a cultural zeitgeist after having been featured in Season 3 premiere of Rick and Morty.
Rick fabricates a memory of “origin story” to turn tables on a prison interrogator. Rick takes his interrogator to try the McNugget sauce and reveals to Morty that everything he does is to get more Szechuan.
Then, fans started requesting for sauce and McDonald’s gifted Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland with his supply of sauce and promised fans they would get the opportunity to try it.
But after a debacle at McDonald’s restaurants across the country where fans were unable to obtain the sauce, the restaurant announced they would be producing a larger amount so all fans can try it easily.
