Hardly any popular properties from the 80s have remained untapped for either a cinematic remake or sequel in recent years. The 80s was an incredibly fertile period for producers who wanted to enter franchise filmmaking and efforts have varied from Transformers to The Smurfs. The main factor was that the children’s shows in that era were aimed to sell toys and merchandise. Among the last IPs that were ripe for a cinematic adaptation was Masters of the Universe, and it seems that the wait is finally over.
Masters of the Universe is the story of Prince Adam, who is the heir to the throne of Eternia, a fictional world which has a novel setting of magic and science fiction. Adam happened to be a humble royal during the day, but, he had the capability of summoning a mystical power to morph into He-Man, the most powerful entity in the universe. The animated show explored his adventures as he took on Skeletor, a demonic sorcerer who tried new ways of gaining power every week.
As per the latest reports, Sony Pictures has ultimately become serious about the concept that has been rotting in developmental hell. Today, they updated about their upcoming movie slate, and as revealed in a tweet from Exhibitor Relations, Masters of the Universe will release in the US on December 18th, 2019.
There are not many details about the movie as the studio hasn’t yet come out with an official declaration. However, murmurs have been going on for quite a while now. There is no official announcement about who will direct the movie, though, McG(Charlie’s Angels) has been associated with the project for a number of years now.
Although there is no confirmation about McG directing the movie, it is apparent that he is working with Sony to create a theme and tone that the MCU fans are comfortable with. This is sensible especially keeping in mind Thor: Ragnarok which also depicts swords, sandals and science fiction as elements of a blockbuster movie. In fact, the latest outing of Marvel might have a far-reaching impact on the fate of Masters of the Universe.
Breaking: We confirm about the new release date, and David Goyer is writing the story. McG is no longer in the reckoning to direct the movie.
The hunt to find the actor to play He-Man is likely to scale into one of the most contested races in Hollywood. Though the 1987 adaptation of the Masters of the Universe was rejected by critics and audiences alike, DolphLungren and Frank Langella remain as favorites for their portrayals of He-Man and Skeletor, respectively and this emphasizes the appeal of the franchise. There is definitely going to be a great deal of news about the world of Eternia in the days to come.
Masters of the Universewill release in U.S. theaters on December 18, 2019.
