Suicide Squad star, Margot Robbie is currently developing a “separate” Harley Quinn movie which is unrelated to the many other DC projects that feature her character. Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens and a Harley/Joker movie have been discussed since Suicide Squad’s release, but Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are yet to firm up the future for Robbie’s popular character.
It is not a secret that Robbie wants to return to the role of Joker’s girlfriend. She was quoted, saying, “I hope to be playing Harley again, at least next year. I love her.” This had led fans to wonder which of the Harley-starring DC projects would go into development and production by next year.
Suicide Squad 2 had seemed to be the likeliest bet. Robbie has now thrown yet another contender into this mix. Speaking to MTV, Robbie had lifted the lid a little on the Harley Quinn movie that she is developing.
“I’ve been working on a separate spinoff Harley thing for a while,” Robbie revealed. When she was asked whether this is the same project as Gotham City Sirens or the Harley/Joker movie, she clarified, “No. It’s a totally separate one.”
Robbie had elaborated on this answer and offered some insight into the current state of Warner Bros’ DCEU slate and the multitude of potential projects in development:
“There’s a lot going on right now and I’m not sure. I, honestly, I don’t think anyone knows what’s going to be the next thing to happen. But I think everyone’s keen to get Harley back on screen, so everyone is working on lots of different versions of what that could be.”
Although there are many irons in the fire, Robbie is aware of where she wants to take Harley. Prompted for specifics of her version, Robbie offered this tease:
“I wanna see her with other women. I was like, I kept saying it when we were shooting Suicide Squad. I was like, ‘she needs her girlfriends. She needs other girls around her because she loves that.’ You’ve seen it in the comics. You’ve seen that she loves meeting people, any people, but she needs a little girl gang.”
It is easy to spot the parallels between Robbie’s idea and Gotham City Sirens, which is focussed on the idea of Harley teaming up with the Catwoman and Poison Ivy. It will be interesting to see which roster of characters assemble with her. Right now, fans are waiting for an official announcement to clarify Harley’s live-action future.
