Last week’s midseason finale fulfilled the wish of Gotham fans when they saw Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) come back and now the extended preview of the series’ return during the spring has given the fans a massive Joker Easter Egg as well. ‘
The preview showed a shackled Joker style Jerome walk upto a camera and leans in closer before it cuts away and then we see a completely unmistakable object drop on the table: a playing card of The Joker.
For quite some time Gotham fans have been wishing for Jerome to come back to the show after he was last seen in the season three episode “The Gentle Art of Making Enemies” and their wish has been fulfilled almost after a year when we saw the character during the final sequence of the last week’s episode as the neighbour of Penguin in Arkham Asylum. The preview suggested that the two baddies will join hands to lead a mutiny inside Arkham and the Joker playing card was also shown, but, fans might not want to give too much weight to the possibility of Jerome being the Joker that they had been hoping for.
Gotham’s co-executive producer Bryan Wynbrandt had spoken exclusively to ComicBook.com in October and had revealed that Jerome had built the base to become the legendary Batman villain ultimately, Jerome is only a tribute to the iconic character.
“Obviously Jerome is our homage,” Wynbrandt said. “He’s obviously not the Joker himself, although he clearly seems to be the impetus that eventually creates the Joker. The more that we see him, the more he carves out his own path I’d say. I wouldn’t say he becomes more the Joker, but the Jerome character continues to evolve.”
However, this thrilling Easter Egg has given Gotham fans hope about the evolution getting Jerome closer to becoming the Batman’s nemesis.
It is winter break time on Gotham, and the show will be back on Fox early in 2018.
