Following an announcement in May that Judge Dredd live-action television series was in development, Karl Urban had confirmed that he had “discussions” on reprising the role from 2012 film, Dredd. The actor is interested but says some story requirements may have to be met before he suits up again for Mega-City One.
During a press junket for Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, where he plays Skurge, he had explained to Screen Rant what the requirements are.
“I’ve had many discussions with them [Rebellion] about my involvement, of which I am interested, and I said to them, ‘Listen, if you write a character that has a function and a purpose and contributes to the overall story, then I might be very interested in reprising that role,’” he said. “I certainly wouldn’t want to step into it and just pay lip service to the movie. There has to be some material there that warrants further exploration of that character. So the ball’s in their court.”
Producer Jason Kingsley had explained that the inhabitants of Mega-City One lend better to long-form storytelling than a two-hour film, and also warned it would be some time before the sci-fi drama premieres.
My best guess is that it’s at least two years away,” he said. “But we’re so early in the process that things could happen a bit faster, or much more slowly.”
