It is an exciting time for all Star Wars fan. In a week’s time, Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi will arrive in theaters. The sequel will continue the main narrative of this franchise after The Force Awakens and allow the the trio of new protagonists to be fleshed out. One of them is John Boyega’s Finn, who had become a sudden member of The Resistance after a mission as a Stormtrooper. The first movie in the trilogy has seen Finn operate Luke’s lightsaber on 2 occasions leading many to wonder if he could be a budding Jedi. And while it is clear that Rey is the Force sensitive one around here, Boyega had revealed that he wishes there could be two.
“Would I like to be a Jedi? I think it would be more interesting if they had more than one person be a Jedi — but I think that that is the one of the unspoken laws of Star Wars. They only have one who has to go away and train. […] I hope it takes an interesting turn; not in terms of being a Jedi, but there are loads more stronger characters in the Star Wars universe that can go up against Jedi and they don’t necessarily have to be a Jedi. […] I would like to explore that more; the whole BobaFett vibe. I would like to explore that for Finn, but who knows?”
If Finn is not going to be a Jedi, John Boyega says he wants to hold his own against likes of Kylo Ren. The actor wants to be a Star Wars badass, which is about every child’s dream.
John Boyega’s comments to Digital Spy confirm that he is not the Force sensitive one that The Force Awakens alluded to. Finn had been featured on the posters and trailers holding Luke’s lightsaber and many assumed that he would be the new apprentice. He could briefly hold his own in a lightsaber duel with KyloRen, who is more experienced with the ancient weapon. This seems to hint that he and Rey may be potential Jedi, although it looks like Daisy Ridley’s character is the one who is moving forward.
It will be interesting to see how Finn continues to develop in The Last Jedi. After recovering from the injuries, he will wake to find that Rey is not to be found. He is in a bit of an existential crisis, unsure if he belongs in The Resistance. He is set to share a bit of screen time with a newcomer Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), but his reunion with Rey will not take too long.
