A new photograph from the upcoming blockbuster The Meg showed Jason Statham facing a giant shark. The classic Syfy channel originals such as Ghost Shark, Sharktopus, and the Sharknado films have ensured that the killer shark films don’t go out of fashion. However, it has been quite some time since a big blockbuster featuring sharks as the main danger has come on the scene. The last time when studios made a big budget shark film was the 1999 blockbuster Deep Blue Sea, and recently The Shallows turned out to be a surprise winner for Columbia Pictures.
All that is set to change courtesy The Meg, which is a $150 million blockbuster based on a book series by Steve Alten. The story is based on the Jason Statham’s character of a navy captain being summoned to rescue a bunch of scientists working at a deep sea research station, who have come under attack from an ancient megalodon. The concept of Statham battling a giant shark has already ensured that The Meg is set to be one of the biggest guilty pleasures of the coming year.
Now Empire has come out with the latest image from the movie, which features Statham looking at the gigantic super shark and being visibly rattled. It is revealed that Statham’s character of Jonas Taylor had earlier faced off with the shark on a different mission, which gave his rescue endeavor a personal touch. The shark also sports a nasty scar, which could be a tribute to the monster from Jaws 2. Have a look at the image below:
The Meg has spent a great deal of time in development and directors including Jan De Bont, and Eli Roth had earlier developed it. Finally, Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) came to helm the project, and the big budget of the movie indicates that there will be a lot of destruction showcased. Statham also earlier called The Meg to be a hybrid between Jaws and Jurassic Park, which once again promises fun for the audience.
Given the casting of Statham and the budget allocated, we don’t think that The Meg will be a mystery thriller like Jaws and would rather try to have a cheesy B-movie feel. It’s not as if that is something wrong, in fact, that might just be the reason which would appeal to a section of viewers, but, the big question is whether the film will draw enough audience for Warner Bros. to justify such a mega budget.
We hope to get a trailer for The Meg soon which will give us a better idea about the giant monster movie releasing in the summer of 2018.
