Between promises of changes to the MCU and key actors reaching the end of deals, fans expect deaths of a few prominent characters in Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled sequel. Although there has been a lot of speculation about who may fall in the movies, we might have seen one of the casualties in the opening moments of the trailer.
In contrast to the voiceover, the footage opens with a somber shot of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark sitting among debris and holding a dirty hand to his lips. While it’s possible that is his hand, the camera’s angle makes it difficult to tell for sure.
To begin with, no one has held their hand like that, unless it is to lick up chocolate and then not with the air of somberness. This suggests Tony is holding someone else’s hand.
There are not many characters in the MCU who can stir that kind of emotion from this superhero. Therefore, it does not require logic to conclude that he is mourning the loss of Pepper Potts.
Played by Gwyneth Paltrow, chief executive officer of Stark Industries appeared in 3 Iron Man movies and The Avengers, but was mentioned in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, in which it had been explained that Pepper and Tony were on a break due to his inability to commit to a relationship. By Spider-Man: Homecoming the two had reconciled, and Paltrow made a cameo, signaling better times.
But this moment from suggests that might not be the case. We are aware that Paltrow had been spotted in August on the set of Avengers 4, wearing an engagement ring but we are left to wonder whether the scene may be a dream. We must keep in mind that Michael Rooker, who had played Yondu in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, has teased his own involvement in Infinity War.
