There was an announcement back in August about Paul Scheer (The League) being signed on to write the much talked about Galaxy Quest TV show for Amazon, and now Scheer has shared some details about what is in store when the show debuts. By the looks of it, the first season will be like a serial and not episodic, and it will be a direct sequel to the original film. This news is bound to delight Galaxy Quest fans who have spent years waiting for the TV adaptation.
Paul Scheer was recently interviewed by SlashFilm, and he said that he has just handed over the first script for the Galaxy Quest TV show and also gave a few details about the plot. Besides, being a sequel to the original film, the show will also have two separate casts which will meet up later in the series. This is what Scheer said:
“Right now, I just handed in my first script to Amazon, so I’m in that zone. I’m excited about it. It’s a bigger idea that’s kind of morphed and changed a little bit. Not much. The thing I keep on saying about it, without giving too much away – because it’s going to be so long before people get to see it, I don’t want people to get too burnt out on me telling you what it’s about before it gets to that point – but for me, it was really important to do service to a Galaxy Quest story that gives you everything that you want and indoctrinates people who have never seen Galaxy Quest into what the fun of that world is. That Tropic Thunder, Galaxy Quest world. And also to continue the story of our original characters and have consequences from the first film.”
It is vital to note that Scheer has stated that it will take a little longer before the show is aired. It is nice to see someone being attached to a project not make grand promises which are not met after years of development.
Paul Scheer further stated that he wasn’t willing to join the project only to make a typical reboot and he is attempting something “real” with the show. Scheer will utilize the elements of the Galaxy Quest film besides adding on his own ideas on what took place later on. He explained:
“So it is mixing two casts. It’s separate kind of adventures that kind of merge, and I’m looking at this first season not as episodic, but as a serialized story. So, the only way I’ve been looking at it is, using everything from the first movie and making the reasons for everything not just – I want to avoid anything that could be viewed as a reboot for reboot’s sake. There are real reasons behind these choices – maybe too much so.”
During the interview, Paul Scheer repeated that he has only given the first script to Amazon who is working on the project for the streaming service. Casting news is not available right now, but, based on what we hear, it is likely that some of the original cast members will be included in some way. Initial discussions about the show had stopped after the death of Alan Rickman in 2016.
Galaxy Quest movie released in 1999 and it was a decent success on the box office and has gone on to become an iconic film. The film is based around the cast of a former cult TV series titled Galaxy Quest which featured a spaceship crew going on intergalactic missions and then they suddenly meet real aliens who consider the show to be a real documentary and it all leads to a genuine intergalactic issue. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shaloub, Sam Rockwell and Daryl Mitchell were the cast of the film, and we expect to see some of them come back in some way in the upcoming Amazon TV series.
