A wait of over a decade might be over now, and it seems that Enchanted 2 is shaping up. Disney has been developing the sequel slowly and steadily for a long time, and we had begun to feel that it might never be made. But, there is an encouraging update from the director of the film which suggests that Disney is dedicated to making Enchanted 2.
Director Adam Shankman appeared at the TCA to promote his YouTube Red series called Step Up: High Water. He was questioned about Enchanted 2 which is officially called Disenchanted. He shared that the script will be ready soon and the sequel will have more songs than the original. This is what the director said.
“We are handing in a script in a couple weeks that I’m super happy with. Then gotta get the music written. The fundamental story has changed a little bit, but not from the base story of it. It’s about Giselle 10 years later going, ‘What is happily ever after?’ There’s a lot more songs this time than there were in the original, at least in the planning phase right now.”
Although he said that they are still planning it, but, apparently Disenchanted is moving in the desired direction. It is vital for a musical to get the songs penned and it takes a bit of time. Adam Shankman is not a novice when it comes to musicals, and he has made the cinematic versions of Hairspray and Tom Cruise starrer Rock of Ages in the past.
Amy Adams starrer Enchanted came out in 2007. She played the character of a young girl from a magical land who is sent to New York City by an evil queen. She behaves like a fish out of the water and falls in love with Patrick Dempsey. Things seemed to be coasting towards a happy ending, but, just like the title of the film, it appeared that Giselle (Adams’ character) was set to face some terrible scenarios. Enchanted was a box office hit which earned $340 million globally against an $85 million budget. That was quite an impressive return and is the reason why Disney decided to make the sequel, although it has been over a decade since the original movie’s release.
Disney has been successful with their live-action movies lately. They have typically made remakes of old classics, but, Enchanted 2 might be just the kind of a story where Disney might excel. Adam Shankman also disclosed via Slash Film that the sequel has just about as much animation as the original film. Though, Disenchanted was originally expected to release this year, the stage of development makes such a possibility unrealistic.
