It is official now that producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will be the showrunner and executive producer of the upcoming Netflix fantasy show The Witcher. Hissrich is renowned for the work she did as a writer and co-executive producer of various TV shows such as The Defenders, Daredevil, and Power on Netflix.
We heard earlier in May that Netflix is going to make a TV series inspired by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher. The series of books that was published in 1994 has already been adapted into comic books by the trio of Maciej Parowski, Bugslaw Polch and Sapkowski as well as a Polish film and TV show (both were titled The Hexer) in 2001 and 2002, respectively and both featured Michal Zebrowski as Geralt of Rivia. The biggest success for The Witcher franchise has been its extremely popular video games – The Witcher (2007), The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings (2009) and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015). The third chapter Wild Hunt is rated among the most awarded video games ever and has received lavish praise for its vast open world, gripping stories and intricate characters.
Variety has now reported that producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is going to be the showrunner and executive producer of The Witcher TV show on Netflix. As of now, it is known that the series will be based on the story of Geralt of Rivia, a monster killer renowned as Witcher who was repeatedly mutated during his youth resulting in his getting various superhuman powers. The books and video games also comprise of a large number of supporting characters such as Geralt’s adopted child Ciri, a child of elder blood who possesses unbelievable powers.
The series has the chance to be known as the next big thing on Netflix, maybe the next Game of Thrones. It has a narrative comprising all the elements such as passionate romance, political drama and great battles involving magic spells and fearsome beasts. We anticipate that the series can be a huge success if it gets the cast, writers, and producers spot on.
The series will have competition in the form of the upcoming Lord of the Rings TV series on Amazon which is reportedly a prequel based in Middle-Earth before the events of the movies. We believe that The Witcher has the edge here despite The Lord of the Rings being more famous and popular, but, it also has the risk of facing a backlash if the series doesn’t match the scale and narrative of the original movies and that’s something we have seen happen to The Hobbit trilogy.
On the other hand, The Witcher gives more scope for the writers to unleash their creativity with the characters and the narrative since the franchise has already undergone some adaptations and has greater flexibility in terms of story-telling in the modern age of fantasy TV shows.
We will bring to you further updates regarding The Witcher as soon as more details emerge.
