Christopher Nolan spent considerable time making The Dark Knight Trilogy and seems like he doesn’t relish the thought of making more modern superhero films. It is well known that the much-criticized film by Joel Schumacher titled Batman & Robin destroyed the Batman franchise that had got going with the iconic 1989 film Batman. Various filmmakers such as Darren Aronofsky and Joss Whedon tried to put the franchise back on track. However, none succeeded until Nolan convinced the Warner Bros. to have another go at the saga of the Caped Crusader as per his interpretation.
Nolan was the co-writer and director of Batman Begins which had Christian Bale play Bruce Wayne aka Batman. Instead of sticking with the set feel of the earlier Schumacher movies, Nolan decided to bring to life a more realistic version of the superhero and just like The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, this film heralded a new period of filmmaking which even impacted other non-superhero films of the day such as Casino Royale and Sherlock Holmes. Nolan went on to produce two more magnificent films of the trilogy: The Dark Knight (which is widely regarded among the all-time greatest superhero films) and The Dark Knight Rises.
Even though he had such an iconic impact on the modern day superhero films, Nolan was absolutely disinterested in making another Batman movie, in fact, no other superhero movie based on any character. Don’t think that he doesn’t like the genre, he loves it, in fact, he had seen the Petty Jenkins directed Wonder Woman recently and he praised it. But, he believes that it is time for other directors to take the genre forward.
“I mean, I watch the films. I enjoy films very much as a moviegoer these days. I spent ten years of my life dealing with one of the greatest characters in popular fiction. It was a great honor and a privilege to work with that, but there’s a time to pass it on to new people.”
We can understand that Nolan wants to expand his creativity beyond the superhero genre and make original story films such as Inception and Interstellar and also various other passionate movies such as Dunkirk which he had been trying to make ever since he began his career. Besides those, he has also shown the desire to take on another legendary fiction character: James Bond. He has repeatedly stated that he would helm a Bond film only if he is given a free hand to create his own interpretation of the long-running franchise.
Irrespective of the genre of the films that Nolan makes in the future, it is certain that all comic book movies that are produced in the future will be compared to his Dark Knight trilogy. While he hasn’t been instrumental in shaping the expanding DCEU which brought the Wonder Woman to the big screen in a live-action format, but, is also coming up with debut live-action movies for Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and Justice League, Nolan had a major part in getting DCEU launched. You may recall that he was an executive producer of the Zack Snyder directed Man of Steel, a movie which had a story written jointly by Nolan and David S. Goyer.
