Kiernan Shipka has been cast to play Sabrina Spellman in the upcoming Netflix series based on the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics, according to a new announcement by Netflix. Shipka has earlier worked on Mad Men and Feud: Bette and Joan.
The part-witch, part-human Sabrina Spellman is the protagonist of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic series, whose magical adventures are interspersed with the daily realities of teenage life. The series will depict Sabrina starting her dark arts practice, alongside studying at Baxter High. The Shipka version of Sabrina will be darker than what fans are accustomed to.
“We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list,” show’s Executive Producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said via a press release. “This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
The decision to cast Shipka might be surprising because earlier audition tapes indicated that Netflix might be planning to hire an Asian-American actor to play the role. The CW series complementing the streaming giant’s other Archie Comic based show, Riverdale, has got the green signal for a 20-episode Netflix run.
