Warning: Spoilers Ahead For The Flash #34
Barry Allen has a long history of facing Reverse-Flashes earlier, however, what if the new Flash villain is his own girlfriend? That’s the question raised by the current DC Comics pages as the story of The Flash: Rebirth has taken a strange turn. The relaunched series saw several Central City residents join the Speed Force. However, things had been peaceful in last few months after Barry Allen handled the come back of Eobard Thawne, the evilest version of Reverse-Flash.
The history of Barry and Thawne is highly complicated, but, the legendary fight between The Flash and his ‘Reverse’ became epic. After she was considered dead by a Speed Force bad guy, Dr.MeenaDhawan (the most serious lady love of Barry Allen) returned to the DC Universe. The idea of something fishy and nasty came true as MeenaDhawan has now become Reverse-Flash who has staked claim to the ‘Negative Speed Force.’
At the end of it all, Eobard Thawne might appear to be a benevolent soul.
The Flash fans who are not updated about his Rebirth adventures would be shocked to hear that anyone other than Iris West is being called as Barry’s lover, but, this is how comic book reboot and relaunch business is. Barry is still a close friend of Iris in DC’s post – New 52 continuity, who might have something great in the store, but, as of now, Dr. Meena Dhawan is his beloved. When the above stated Speed Force storm gave The Flash’s powers to several harmless Central City inhabitants, Dr.MeenaDhawan led the process of studying, supporting and training them to become a fresh batch of Flashes. She even adopted the name ‘Fast Track’ and donned a black and yellow superhero suit after having attained Speed Force powers.
Love was instant as Barry revealed his real identity to her (not as common a thing as on TV). This became tragic when speedster villain Godspeed confronted her, killed her pupils and vanished with her. That was until The Flash #32 showed a lady dressed in a new black and white adaptation of Barry’s Flash suit, burst out of the Speed Force. Dr.MeenaDhawan’s return should have been a great occasion, but, her Speed Force trip has told her a nasty truth: Barry Allen is dying.
To explain why Barry is dying would require explaining the Speed Force’s and the Negative Speed Force’s nature, which is the source of Reverse-Flash’s powers. The explanation is fantasy merged with science fiction, thus, the simpler is the best: Barry Allen defeated Thawne by battling, absorbing and fighting to control the Negative Speed Force inside his own body. That’s where Dr.MeenaDhawan enters, having created a formula extracting by extracting the Negative Speed Force from Barry so that the conflict won’t kill him.
…it also meant that she would consume it herself.
We are not sure what name Dr.MeenaDhawan would take; though, new Reverse-Flash is appropriate because she is powered by the same Negative Speed Force that powered Thawne for years. Meanwhile, ‘Negative Flash’ might be used to ensure that only a select few get to play the most iconic villain (however, the addition of a brilliant and faithful woman to the list won’t disappoint fans). Whatever may happen, Meena’s intentions are doubtful. Issue #34 reveals her real plans; she worked to figure out the Speed Force secrets before gaining access to it and to use that knowledge to help her colleagues at Black Hole – a military group aiming to steal the powers for their own uses. By winning Barry’s trust and letting Meena take the Negative Speed Force herself, the Superhero unknowingly facilitated the creation of this new villain.
The forthcoming issues would answer most of the questions, but, the fate of this ‘Negative’ speedster who won Barry Allen’s heart before his speed is anyone’s guess. Michael Moreci, Joshua Williamson, and Pop Mhan have created a superb thriller and a deadly costumed villain. We only wish that a villain like Dr.MeenaDhawan might hang around in the DC Universe in some form.
Whether Barry Allen will regain his old self and whether this backstabbing will make him open or skeptical about future romances is something that time will reveal.
The Flash #34is out now.
