It is known to the fandom for a while now that the last film of Marvel’s Phase 3 is going to be Avengers 4 which will effectively end the present day MCU. The president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige reaffirmed this in the latest interview which many fans are considering to be an indication that Phase 3’s end means the end of the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, as per James Gunn who directed the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, this is not true. A fan asked Gunn on Twitter if MCU will truly “end after phase 3,” James Gunn said that on the contrary the Avengers 4 would set in motion a brand new story within MCU.
“No. Read Kevin Feige’s quotes & not the static around them. It’s the end of one long story & the beginning of another. And one of the films that will kickstart the new story will be #GotGVol3.”
The release of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 has been scheduled for July 5, 2019, and that’s a couple of months after the release of Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019, thus, the Spidey film will be the first release of a Marvel Phase 4 film. It is beyond doubt that Avengers 4 will end the 22 film arc that started in Marvel Phase 1 and will wrap up in phase 3. Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 deals with the consequences of Avengers 4 and will give the direction to the future storyline. There are nearly two more years to go before phase 3 ends, and although it will end a story arc, it won’t end the MCU.
Other than Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 that will release in July 2019, we need to wait and watch if Marvel has in store a third Marvel film scheduled for late 2019, most likely in early November because that’s traditionally when Marvel releases a movie. In fact, back in October 2015 itself, Marvel had marked three fresh dates for 2020, May 1, 2020, July 10, 2020, and November 6, 2020, and fans at that time had expected them all to be the initial films of Phase 4. One of the three films is likely to be the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which has been nearly confirmed by James Gunn during a long and emotional Facebook post. It is expected that the film would follow on from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and will release on May 1, 2020, but, there is no official word about it.
We are unlikely to find out what else is being planned for Phase 4 for some more time. Kevin Feige had said in November last year that the studio has a great deal of clarity about the direction that they will be heading to, however, if they announce any titles for the Phase 4 films then they could serve as spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. In fact, the title Avengers 4 is in itself is regarded as a spoiler for the Avengers: Infinity War, therefore, we need to wait at least until May 2018 to get further insight into the Phase 4 of MCU. Go ahead and check out what James Gunn said before clarifying that MCU is not going to finish with Phase 3, on James Gunn Twitter.
