In every superhero story, you need a strong antagonist to make the whole story more interesting. Here are 10 actors who auditioned for a hero’s role, but ultimately ended up landing the role of the villain. With the exception of two actors on this list, all of the actors on this list auditioned and/or screen-tested for their respective parts. While they did not get the role they wanted, they got the one they deserved and gave unforgettable performances.
10. Tom Hidldeston – Thor (2011)
With three movies as Loki under his belt, you cannot imagine Tom Hiddleston as any other character in the amazing world of Marvel. However, before he played the Asgardian trickster, the actor originally auditioned for the role of Thor. Chris Hemsworth would get the role of the God of Thunder, and he beat out a long list of actors who wanted the part including his brother Liam Hemsworth.
9. Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight (2008)
Last but certainly not least, is the remarkable portrayal of the Joker by Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight. The actor won a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, marking the very first time that an Oscar was given to a comic-book movie for achievement in acting. Along with Christian Bale, Cillian Murphy and many others, director Christopher Nolan initially spoke to the actor to discuss playing the role of Bruce Wayne, AKA Batman in the blockbuster Batman Begins. The star that became famous overnight went for the meeting, but told Nolan right away that he was not interested. Nolan said that Ledger was gracious about it and said that he would never play a role in a superhero movie. After Batman Begins was released, Ledger changed his mind and ran after the chance to play the Joker, months before there was even an actual screenplay for The Dark Knight.
